Everything Is Movement For Me.
Sound Geometry Moves the Body as the Breathing & Living Monument (2024)
Sound Geometry

Soundspace, Soundscape & Landscape
Allow sound to have a prominent space
Allow sound to take you to places, emotional places
Sound holds a person, holds space, holds time, time passing into present moment
Sound transports us, takes us to a certain time in time, a certain space in space
Sound stays, sound is always there, nothing is lost
Sound Geometry
Sound as energy moves and travels in space, in shape, on its route as an imagery
Sound touches the body as a whole
Body as a transforming medium, for sound, the channel of connection, to vibrate, to connect, to respond, to echo, and to archive
Sound moves me
Sound dances me
Sound expands me
Sound as energy travels through me
the geometry of sound is perceived & visualized by the space within the body & surrounding space of the body
the geometry of body moving is archived & transformed into kinaesthetic charcoal drawing
Drawing flows with time, the trace of gesture
drawing is a process of thinking, a flow of energy
Body as the Monument
spine work is the living and breathing monument within the body
also the flowing moving structure
solid, grounded, concrete
What do these coal mining monuments do to the body?
the vast, giant, tall, voluminous, huge, and concrete sculpture
with industrial, agricultural, cultural meaning and values
always breathing, living and moving there
echoing to “sound is always there”, the soundscape
these coal mining monuments are always there, the landscape
What do they do to the body?
How does the body respond?
About this project
Soundscape of coal mining
Two paper rolls symbolize the landscape of Rhein and Ruhr, also the shifting of dimensions, the kinaesthetic charcoal and pastel drawing is the responding bodily moving archive to slag heaps monuments in NRW.

Nov 2024.
This project began in 2016, during my MA Creative Practice at ID in London, called “Listening-Making-Archiving: The Kinaesthetic Dancing & Drawing”. I worked with listening, tuning in, charcoal drawing, connecting with the calligraphy experience within the body and transforming into calligraphy quality of movement, as well as two paper rolls as exhibition space. In 2019, during E|MERGE residency in USA, the first time I tried to draw on a large scale paper with charcoal and pastel, called “Everything is Movement for Me”, working with energy. Later on, lying on big paper to draw with the whole body titled “Bodily Drawing” was facilitated in sessions to adults and kids.
In 2024, with the awarding residency Tanzrecherche NRW, without any expectation of what the outcome would be, the project started on flight with documentary “32 sounds” by Sam Green. In Dusseldorf and Essen, I applied this project there, and worked with soundspace, landscape, sound geometry, body as the living and breathing monument, slag heaps, coal mining and industrial sites, charcoal and pastel drawing, two paper rolls to create space underneath, and the landscape of Rhein and Ruhr. An interdisciplinary dance art project which I enjoy having fun playing with space, movement, flowing energy, landscape, history, archive, light and shadow, etc.
I love to see how an artistic project transform itself over the years. Monuments and paper landscape are two new layers during my residency time in Germany. What do these monuments mean? In the industrial times, giant monuments like shafts, slag heaps, chimney, coking plants, cooling towers start to be everywhere in the flat land, like a monster or a landmark in people’s life and in their surrounding landscape, bringing air pollution but also industrial evolution. There is some photography that kids are having soccer game competition with the coal mining shafts in the background. The coal mining site also developed and became a village where people and families live and work. Over time, after coal mining was finished, some factories were abandoned, some have become museums, industrial heritage sites, studios or theatres for performing artists, or recreational sites for people in the community after governments invited architects or sculptors to design onsite installations, for example, Tiger and Turtle in Duisburg, NRW, Germany. So does the Zollverein in Essen, being part of UNESCO, the whole complex has become museums, restaurants, theatre companies office and storage places, university buildings, artistic organisations, etc, and the office very often host activities for local residents and international tourists to engage and participate.
In terms of paper rolls, in the past they were used to exhibit the charcoal drawing, or the big scale paper to be drawn. During the residency at Tanzrecherche NRW, while folding and curving, intuitively I found them work more amazingly to create landscape symbolizing the two rivers at Ruhr area – river Rhein and river Ruhr, which is where the coal mining industry located.
